In 1988, one of Candlelighters current board members, Larry Chadwick, and a small group of his friends started the Oregon Cancer Ski Out as a way to positively channel their sadness and frustration over the loss of loved ones to cancer. The idea was to create an event that would benefit cancer research, hospice and cancer prevention programs. The event had to be meaningful, affordable and well organized, but above all, it had to be fun!
Thanks, Oregon Cancer Ski Out!
The result was an innovative ski race with a team-based format that rewarded consistency, not speed, making it possible for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities to participate. Candlelighters has been one of the beneficiaries of Cancer Ski Out over the years, resulting in more than $200,000 in contributions over the years. This year, Candlelighters was awarded $10,000. We are to grateful and honored for their continued support!
