A Message from the Executive Director

October 15, 2025

Candlelighters Supporters,

What a summer it has been! During the past few months, we have hosted a wide range of successful family events throughout the state – Family Day in June was truly memorable.  Our Latino Family picnic brought families together in a safe space in which to share their experiences and gain comfort from others that have experienced a similar journey. Mom’s Night Out provided an opportunity for bonding and creative expression. In the Mid-Willamette Valley, the annual fishing trip was a huge hit – even the rain couldn’t dampen spirits – and, in Southern Oregon, the Corvette show raised awareness (and funding) for Candlelighters.

With Childhood Cancer Awareness month coming up in September, we have a multitude of ways for our donors to plug in, help spread the word about our mission and continue to support our work. We are greatly looking forward to continuing our collaboration with the Portland Thorns and have an opportunity for all of our supporters to help win the Thorns Fan Impact Award! Get all more details here. In September, our 23rd annual Ride for a Child will take place in Crater Lake. Our incredible volunteer riders have been out there, training and fundraising in support of our kids and programs. As additional support for Ride for a Child, one of our fantastic sponsors, Overhead Door PDX is donating $50 for every garage door opener sold throughout August. We are so grateful!

We are also excited to be part of Thursday Night Motocross again this year and have launched Moto for a Child which brings motocross riders into the fundraising mix, helping raise funds and awareness for Candlelighters. New this year is a Gresham Give Back night on September 12 in which various businesses are participating to support Candlelighters. Last, but certainly not least, we will be hosting our 4th annual Sunset Sips event in Lake Oswego on September 18, a lovely evening filled with inspiration, boat rides and camaraderie all in support of Candlelighters. We hope to see you there!

We recently welcomed three new board members, Zabyn Towner, a Candlelighters family, an attorney and the Executive Director of Northwest Requirement Utilities, Jim Stumpf, CEO of Overhead Door PDX and longtime Ride for a Child rider and supporter, and Dr. Linda Stork, a renowned pediatric oncologist and professor at OHSU that many of our families will know. Welcome to all of you and thank you for joining our board of directors!

In terms of foundation support, a huge thanks to the Hampton Family Foundation, PacificSource and the Salem Foundation. Foundation grants comprise close to 45% of our revenue. Thank you!

As always, we are truly grateful for our donors’ sustained support. During these tumultuous times, organizations like Candlelighters are more important than ever, offering hope for our families during their most difficult time. Thank you for always being there for Candlelighters.

Warmly,

Daniela Meltzer
Executive Director
